From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
I cannot recommend Francis Chappell and Sons (Woolwich) highly enough. They supported me so well with the funeral arrangements for my mother. Clare, then went on to help me with the headstone. She was patient, kind and so well organised throughout. At a very difficult and overwhelming time, she made everything feel manageable. The finished headstone is beautiful and brings me real comfort. I could not have done it without her.
Thank you, Clare, and the whole team.
Excellent service from both Clare and Thomas , professional , caring and always courteous , all characteristics sadly lacking nowadays .
We recently used this funeral home following the loss of my aunt, and I cannot thank Clare and the team enough for the care, kindness and professionalism they showed throughout.
From the initial meeting to discuss the family’s wishes, we felt listened to and well supported. Clare was very understanding of the fact that I had been dealing with much of my aunt’s administration and was excellent at keeping me informed, while at the same time being sensitive to the wishes and feelings of other family members.
Communication before the cremation was very good. The funeral director personally called me to go through the timings and to make sure the mobility needs of some family members were taken into account, which meant a great deal to us.
On the day itself, everything was handled calmly, respectfully and professionally, making what was naturally a very difficult occasion as smooth as possible for the family.
We are very grateful for the way my aunt and our family were looked after, and I would gladly recommend this funeral home to anyone needing compassionate and professional support at a difficult time.
I cannot thank the team at Francis Chapel Funeral Directors enough for their incredible care and compassion during such a difficult time. From the very beginning, they were attentive, understanding, and exceptionally supportive. A special thank you to Clare, our Funeral Services Arranger, who guided us through the planning with so much patience and clarity. On the day of the service, the officiator was equally fantastic—so kind, attentive, and handled everything with utmost dignity, ensuring the entire day ran smoothly and seamlessly. They truly took the weight off our shoulders when we needed it most. I highly recommend their services to anyone needing care and professionalism for their loved ones.
